What Does Compressor Oil Do?
Compressor oil provides lubrication between moving components such as bearings, cylinders, rotors and other internal parts. It also helps dissipate heat, protect surfaces against corrosion and limit deposits that can form as the lubricant is exposed to high operating temperatures.
Choosing the Correct Compressor Oil
The right compressor oil depends on several factors, including compressor type, operating temperature, pressure and manufacturer specification. Two oils with the same viscosity may have different properties and additive packages, so the recommended specification should always be checked rather than choosing on viscosity alone.
Oils for Different Compressor Types
Reciprocating, rotary screw and rotary vane compressors can have different lubrication requirements. Some equipment is designed to use conventional mineral oils, while other compressors require synthetic formulations for particular temperatures, operating periods or service intervals. Refer to the equipment handbook before changing oil type or formulation.
Compressor Oil Viscosity Grades
Compressor oils are available in different viscosity grades to suit different equipment and operating conditions. Common grades can include ISO VG 32, 46, 68 and 100, although the correct grade will depend on the compressor. Using an oil that is too thin or too thick can affect lubrication, so the manufacturer's recommendation should take priority.
Related Oils and Lubricants
Compressed air systems can have several different lubrication requirements. Air Tool Oils are designed for suitable pneumatic tools and should not be confused with the oil used within the compressor itself. Bearing & Circulating Oils and Greases may be required elsewhere in industrial machinery, while Hydraulic Oils and Industrial Gear Oils cover hydraulic and geared systems.
For compressors handling gases rather than conventional compressed air, our Gas Compressor Oils range covers specialist applications where different lubricant properties may be required.
Finding the Right Compressor Oil
Before selecting a compressor oil, check the equipment handbook for the recommended viscosity grade, oil type and performance specification. The compressor design and operating conditions should also be considered. If you are unsure which product is suitable, you can contact our team with your equipment details and lubricant requirements.
