Mould Oils for Concrete & Construction Applications

Mould oils are release agents used to help prevent concrete from bonding to moulds, formwork and casting surfaces. Applying the correct product before concrete is poured can make formwork easier to remove while helping to reduce damage to both the finished concrete surface and the mould itself.

At Smith & Allan, we supply mould oils for concrete production, construction and precast applications. Different products are available to suit varying mould materials, application methods and working conditions.

What Are Mould Oils Used For?

Mould oil creates a thin barrier between freshly poured concrete and the surface of the mould or formwork. Once the concrete has cured, this barrier helps the mould separate cleanly from the finished surface, reducing sticking and making removal easier.

Choosing the Correct Mould Oil

The right mould oil will depend on factors such as the mould material, type of concrete, required surface finish and application method. Products may be suitable for steel, timber or other types of formwork, so the individual product specification should always be checked before use.

Applying Mould Oil Correctly

Mould oil should generally be applied evenly to a clean mould surface before the concrete is poured. Using more product than necessary can affect the quality of the finished surface, so application rates and methods should follow the product manufacturer's instructions. Depending on the product, application may be by spray, brush or roller.

Supporting a Clean Concrete Finish

Correct use of a suitable release agent can help minimise surface defects caused by concrete adhering to formwork. This can be particularly important for precast concrete and applications where the appearance of the finished surface matters. The condition and preparation of the mould itself will also influence the final result.

Related Oils and Lubricants

Construction and concrete handling equipment can have several separate lubrication requirements. Hydraulic Oils are used in suitable hydraulic machinery, while Industrial Gear Oils cover gearboxes and other geared equipment. Greases may be required for bearings, joints and other moving components, while Heavy Duty Engine Oils can be used in construction and plant machinery where the relevant specification is required.

For equipment used across construction, quarrying and other demanding environments, Off Highway Transmission Oils may also be required for suitable transmission and drivetrain systems.

Finding the Right Mould Oil

Before selecting a mould oil, consider the mould or formwork material, concrete application and required finish. The individual product's instructions should be checked for compatibility, coverage and recommended application method.
